About
There are few rituals as deeply rooted in Ibiza as the Sunday drum circle in Cala Benirrás. In the northwest corner of the island, between Sant Miquel and Sant Joan, this natural stone terrace facing the sea has been gathering hundreds of people at sunset for decades. The atmosphere is bohemian, the crowd mixes long-time residents with visitors who have been making the journey especially for this for years, and the music oscillates between ambient house and chill-out, although the true spotlight is on the collective acoustic percussion.
The space is organized into a single open natural stone terrace that descends in levels towards the shore. The tables are rustic wood; the stone benches are integrated directly into the cliff rock. There are no barriers between the public and the sea: the terrace ends where the water begins, and stone stairs lead directly to crystal-clear waters that allow swimming at any time of day. There is no formal dance floor or indoor room: the action is concentrated in the bar area and on the natural esplanade where the drum circle takes place. The sound system is portable and does not seek to compete with the collective acoustic percussion.
It takes about 25 minutes by car from the center of Ibiza, driving along secondary roads that cross the rural interior of the island between fields and pine forests. The L4A bus line connects Ibiza town with the cove in high season, with departures every two hours: useful for the outward journey, but it's advisable to check the schedule of the last service before going. Address: Cala Benirras, s/n, 07815 Ibiza, término municipal de Sant Joan. There is no strict dress code; the public opts for informal beachwear. The usual hours are from 10:00 until closing after sunset, approximately 21:00, with continuous service of drinks and light cuisine throughout the day.
The Sunday drum circle is the central event: hundreds of spontaneous participants, and anyone can join with their instrument. In July and August, the ritual is also repeated on Thursdays with fewer attendees, making it a quieter alternative. Afternoons of free percussion coexist with guest DJ sessions that begin after sunset and extend until closing. The place has no fixed residencies or international commercial circuit artists; its identity lies precisely in the direct participation of the public and the absence of an elevated stage. Arrive before 19:00 to find a spot on the terrace: when sunset begins, the cove fills up quickly and space is limited.
